Bettie Palmer letter, 1858 Feb. 9.

A handwritten, signed letter by Bettie Hockley Russel Palmer (Mrs. Edward C.), of St. Paul, to her mother in Vermont. The letter contains detailed information on St. Paul social events, with descriptions of parties, food, clothing, references to a number of St. Paul citizens, and brief mentions of the weather. The letterhead contains an engraving of St. Paul as it appeared in 1857.

Very little biographical information on Bettie Palmer could be located. Handwritten notes by Rebecca Wheeler on the back of the letter give some data. Minnesota Biographies contains a short sketch of Bettie's husband, Judge Edward C. Palmer. He was also located in the 1857 census (St. Paul, first ward, p. 178), in the 1870 census (St. Paul, first ward, p. 973), and in the 1863 St. Paul City Directory.
